Yeah, Dreamwidth (and LiveJournal before it) is more of a general blogging / diary based culture, more than Tumblr. There are plenty of Geeks here (*points to self*), but we're much more likely to talk about our fandoms at the same time and in the same place on our journals -- mixing and matching. Tumblr is really set up best for curation by subject (I think, I've only been blogging there for about three years, compared to sixteen + years for LiveJournal/Dreamwidth combined), and Dreamwidth is more set up for talking/writing.
I see you've filled out your profile with a long list of interests. That's good. You might have noticed that a lot of those interests show up as links. If you click on one, it will pull up a list of all the communities (shared blogs) and individual users who also have that listed as an interest. When you visit another person's blog and check their profile, you'll see some of their interests are in bold -- those are ones that you two have in common.
And communities are always listed first -- if you join a community, be sure to click "Subscribe," too, or it won't show up on your reading page.
